Fund Raiser

The Sonic Fund raiser was a huge success! Thank you to everyone that came out to help out both working and donating.

As we get closer to the start of our practices I want to remind everyone to keep your goals in sight.

Here is a quote from the Great Coach K from Duke University.

“When you are passionate, you always have your destination in sight and you are not distracted by obstacles. Because you love what you are pursuing, things like rejection and setbacks will not hinder you in your pursuit. You believe that nothing can stop you!”

Dedication and Practice

Darren Hardy of Success Magazine discuss the development of habits:

Despite his limited natural athletic ability, Larry Bird led the Boston Celtics to three world championships and remains one of the best players of all time. How did he do it?

It was Larry's habits—his relentless dedication to practice and to improve his game. Bird was one of the most consistent free-throw shooters in the history of the NBA. Growing up, his habit was to practice five hundred free-throw shots every morning before school. With that kind of discipline, Larry made the most of his God-given talents and kicked the butts of some of the most "gifted" players on the court.

What it Takes to be Number One

The link Below is a 3 minute video  entitled 'What it Takes to be Number One' and is based on the legendary NFL coach Vince Lomardi. This is a great use of 3 minutes for anyone striving to be the best at what they do.

Open Gym

Had a pretty small turnout today for open gym but for once over half of the guys playing were still in school. I hope that becomes a regular scene in the gym regardless of how many people show up to play. One week before school starts and I am excited to get started and meet everybody, hopefully I will meet a few more at the gym this week. Open gym times for the week will be posted sometime tomorrow.

Shoot-A-Way 'The Gun'

We got a new shooting machine in recently for the use of the basketball programs galled "The Gun". This is going to be a great tool for us and I am excited that if finally came in. It is a machine that automatically rebounds and passes the ball to shooters and keeps track of the number of shots attempted, made and the shooting percentage. To find more information look on the website below.

Remember open gym tonight from 7-9 and Sunday from 2-4, both in the PE gym.

Advice for Underclassmen

I have found a ton of good information in a blog created by the LSU women's coach Bob Starkey, this past Tuesday he had a handout created by Kevin Eastman called "Rookie Awareness". I have picked out three things I wanted to pass along to the underclassmen.

1. Be strong enough to make your own decisions. All players know what is right and what is wrong in every situation. If in doubt, know that it's probably wrong.

2. Your youth should not be an excuse. You have as much right to play as the veterans do! Respect them, but don't be afraid to compete against them.

3. Remember, coaches always see players who dive on the floor, take charges, encourage teammates, play unselfishly, and defend their tails off!

Welcome!!

Welcome to the Steer Basketball blog! This blog is intended to provide information to the parents, players and fans of the Steer basketball program. I, Coach Thompson, will be posting information about practice schedules, games times and results, and other information through out the year.

For those of you who do not know me, this is my second tenor in Big Spring. I was here for two years, the 06-07 and 07-08 school years where I worked under basketball coaches Joey Martin and Marcus Morris. I then accepted an assistant position in Granbury ISD, stayed there for two years and I am now back in West Texas where I feel at home. I am excited about my chance to come back to BSHS and build upon the success that the Steers enjoyed in the 2009-2010 season.
